CHDI is dedicated to ensuring that the behavioral health concerns of children and their families are effectively addressed in pediatric and primary care practices. Specifically, the Institute is working to identify and promote effective behavioral health screening, interventions, and referral methods in the primary care setting. Several of the strategies we are pursuing include the following:
- Increase the capacity of primary care practitioners to manage behavioral health through training, support, consultation, and enhanced reimbursement
- Provide on-site mental health clinicians
- Develop and/or disseminate information and provide training about specific evidence-based screening, assessment, and referral
- Integrate information into pre-professional medical and behavioral health training curricula
- Develop funding and reimbursement strategies to support the work
Also, CHDI is supporting four pilot programs, in which behavioral health clinicians are on-site in pediatric practices and links are established to a full array of behavioral health services from partnering behavioral health agencies.
In addition, CHDI has published a position paper on linking behavioral health and primary care.
