Child care consultation refers to professional guidance or services delivered onsite at a child care program. The multi-disciplinary model that CHDI is promoting includes consultation on health, mental health and education issues. The goal of the consultation is to improve the overall quality of child care services and to address the individual needs of a child and his/her family as necessary.
Unlike many states, Connecticut child care licensing regulations require that child care centers and group day care homes utilize consultants. However, considerable variation exists among providers in their use of consultants. CHDI’s efforts around consultation seek to strengthen regulations concerning the use of consultants and to advocate for a multi-disciplinary and more team-oriented approach to consultation that will address children’s needs more comprehensively.
In collaboration with key state agency and community partners, CHDI is working to design a blueprint for a multi-disciplinary consultation model that will be piloted at the local level and evaluated. If the model proves effective, we will work to implement the model to scale and develop a statewide multi-disciplinary consultation system.
