Behavioral Health Services In Pediatric Primary Care
CHDI recognizes that the primary care setting is an ideal place to address behavioral health concerns in children at an early stage before they reach a crisis situation and require extensive intervention services. Pediatric primary care can do this through early identification of concerns, counseling and parental support within the office, and timely connection of children to behavioral health clinicians when necessary. Because child health providers see families and children on an ongoing basis, they are in an ideal situation for recognizing behavioral health challenges early.
CHDI activities include:
• Helping pediatric and family medicine practices implement behavioral health screening tools
• Training child health providers in brief office counseling for concerns that fall within normal development themes
• Linking child health providers with behavioral health clinicians to ensure seamless connection of children and families to behavioral health services and ongoing coordination of care between the health and mental health providers
• Advocating for increased support of behavioral health services for children including higher reimbursements, coverage for services that address the whole family, and support of maternal depression screening and services
