A state’s ability to turn the administrative data it collects into a vehicle for policy-relevant research is a key factor in determining how well it identifies the needs of young children and families, develops programs to meet those needs and evaluates the outcomes.
School Readiness Indicators Initiative
The goal of the initiative is to improve school readiness, using the development and dissemination of indicator data on child well-being as a vehicle for advancing systemic change at the state and local level.

Currently, useful information on the qualifications, compensation, recruitment and retention of the early care and education workforce is fragmented and incomplete. To address this issue, DataCONNections is identifying research gaps and filling in some of those gaps through new data collection, changes in the way data is recorded in state databases and new analyses of existing data.

Through a planning grant from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, Connecticut is developing a plan to improve its early childhood services system.

Connecticut’s Department of Education (SDE) recently launched the Student Identifier Database, a new child tracking system that captures data on students.
Early childhood data profiles
DataCONNections has created a compendium of published or web-based early childhood data/information as well as a detailed inventory of state administrative databases on young children, including codebooks and listings of variables captured in each database.
