Issue Brief 78: Promoting a Healthy Weight from Birth
Childhood obesity is a significant public health challenge in the U.S., with one in five children and adolescents meeting the definition of overweight or obese. In Connecticut [as of 2020], close to one in three kindergarten and third grade students are already overweight or obese. While obesity is a concern across all population groups, children from low-income families are significantly more likely to experience obesity compared to higher-income peers.
This issue brief shares lessons and strategies learned from four projects focused on improving early feeding practices for Connecticut’s children, with implications for pediatric providers, public health advocates, communities and states.

This Issue Brief was prepared by former CHDI Senior Associate Abby Alter. It is dedicated to Dr. Marjorie Rosenthal in honor of her extraordinary life and work to improve children’s health. Marjorie was the lead investigator for Yale’s obesity prevention project, which is highlighted in this Issue Brief. CHDI was fortunate to partner with her over the years, and she will be greatly missed.
