About This Training

2 CECs

School avoidance or refusal can be driven by a desire to avoid negative emotional states and/or to seek attention and rewards. This behavior may or may not be accompanied by a behavioral health condition. In order to properly address school refusal, clinicians need to begin with a functional understanding of school avoidance/refusal behavior.

This course will introduce the learners to the four functional profiles of school refusal/avoidance. We will also address common obstacles to school attendance, the use of behavior management strategies, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on school attendance, and the importance of consultation with schools/medical/mental health professionals.

Instruction will include lecture, case presentations, and the opportunity for case reflections.
